Zohran Mamdani’s Wife’s Familiar Look Has Fans Noticing a Subtle Message
New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is winning more favor with voters, and the reason has little to do with politics. The Ugandan immigrant beat former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Nov. 4 mayoral race.
In his acceptance speech, the 34-year-old democratic socialist said, “Here we believe in standing up for those we love” before delivering pointed remarks at Donald Trump. Yet, it’s his spouse’s surprising good luck charm that has social media users buzzing in the wake of his win.
Less than 24 hours after his victory, a side-by-side photo surfaced of him and his wife, Rama Diwali. In one image, the newlyweds were photographed on their wedding day, and in the other, she stood prepared to cast a vote to launch his political career.
Eagle-eyed observers zoomed in and noticed that Diwali wore the same black boots on both occasions. A user remarked, “I love that Rama Duwaji wore her wedding boots to cast her vote.” The observation prompted another user to respond, “Those are her lucky boots!”
Someone else perceived the footwear as an endearing sign of the couple’s relatability. The individual comment read, “Because they are normal non-billionaires who get to wear things more than once!”
Another joked, “I feel like she is setting herself up to be quite the style icon. I think she’s up next.”

Mamdani met his wife on Hinge in 2021, and their relationship was confirmed in 2022.
According to a May 12 Instagram post uploaded by Mamdani, the pair exchanged vows in a civil ceremony this past March at the City Clerk’s Office. They reportedly tied the knot months prior during a ceremony in December 2024 in the United Arab Emirates.
The Brooklyn artist has maintained her identity outside of her partner’s campaigning. He hit back on Instagram at detractors who attempted to thrust her into the spotlight. In her defense, Mamdani wrote, “right-wing trolls are trying to make this race — which should be about you — about her. Rama isn’t just my wife, she’s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.”
A supporter commented, “The right wing can’t comprehend a beautiful, happy, talented and compassionate couple in leadership. Unthinkable!”
However, the artist was not limited to the role of a supportive partner throughout the mayor’s race. The New York School of Visual Arts alum played an integral role in shaping the look of her husband’s campaign.
According to CNN, Diwali “helped finalize the campaign’s brand identity…iconography and font…improving the campaign’s digital sensibilities.”
In a June photo dump, Duwaji shared a photo strip of her and Mamdani appearing head over heels for each other. She captioned the post, “Couldn’t possibly be prouder.”
The carousel of images included a selfie of the Syrian-born creative holding an “I voted early!” sticker as she posed in front of her husband’s poster ahead of the New York primaries. Even then, supporters were calling her the first lady of New York.
