Pras Michel faces legal battle over jail bid
Pras Michel, the Fugees rapper, is seeking to delay reporting to prison while appealing his 14-year sentence following convictions for international fraud and acting as an unregistered foreign agent. The case has attracted national attention, raising questions about trial procedures and jury conduct.
Michel was convicted in April 2023 on multiple counts after prosecutors said he accepted $100 million from Malaysian financier Jho Low to influence U.S. political figures, including former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Last month, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison, prompting his legal team to file an appeal.
Appeal raises questions about jury conduct
On December 19, Michel’s attorneys submitted a motion seeking bail during the appeals process. The filing claims the trial involved significant errors, including improper jury influence and concerns over the sufficiency of evidence. The defense describes these issues as unprecedented in federal court.
According to the motion, the trial judge referred to Michel and others as co-conspirators multiple times in front of the jury, applied the co-conspirator exception to hearsay rules, and allowed FBI Agent Robert Heuchling to provide testimony that repeatedly implied Michel’s guilt. The defense argues these actions improperly influenced the jury and could warrant a new trial.
Defense calls trial unfair
Michel’s team has characterized the trial as a “coronation of guilt,” emphasizing that the rapper’s constitutional right to an impartial jury was compromised. The filing notes that if the appeal succeeds, Michel could receive a new trial, see most of the convictions reversed, or have his sentence reduced.
The attorneys contend the case presents “substantial questions” that courts have not yet addressed, highlighting the extraordinary nature of the alleged jury influence.
Prosecutors push for maximum sentence
Prosecutors argued that Michel’s actions were a serious betrayal, asking for a life sentence. They described his conduct as unapologetic and deliberate, stressing that the punishment should reflect both the scale of the crimes and the risks posed to the country.
Michel’s legal team, however, sought a three-year sentence, calling the life sentence request excessive. They argued that the government’s position illustrated how sentencing guidelines could produce unfair results and criticized the severity of the requested penalty, which they said was typically reserved for terrorists or cartel leaders.

The charges also included claims that Michel violated campaign finance laws during Obama’s 2012 campaign and attempted to influence the Trump administration in 2017. Michel has maintained that his involvement was financially motivated and that he received poor legal guidance.
In previous interviews, Michel admitted he found parts of the situation “a bit exciting” but insisted he never intended to act as a spy. He described his actions as technically making him a foreign agent while denying any romanticized notion of espionage.
