California city builds affordable housing complex for teachers

Daly City, California, is taking significant steps to support its local educators by opening an affordable housing complex specifically for teachers. On Aug. 6, San Mateo County unveiled this innovative housing initiative located on the grounds of an elementary school.

Overview of the affordable housing complex

The new housing complex, Eastmoor Heights, features 56 units designed to provide teachers with a convenient living arrangement. A parking lot separates the school from the housing, ensuring that teachers can easily walk to work. The complex also includes a variety of amenities, such as a laundry facility, community room, courtyard and a play area for children, fostering a vibrant community environment.

A commitment to supporting educators

This initiative is not a new concept for Daly City. In 2018, district voters approved a $33 million bond measure to fund the housing complex, addressing a pressing issue of high employee turnover rates, which stood at 25%. Many teachers and staff were forced to relocate due to the rising cost of living, with some commuting as far as two hours to reach their jobs.

The affordable housing units have sparked interest from potential applicants, including those from out of state. Rent for the approved teachers will be capped at 50% below the market rate at the time of occupancy, making it a viable option for educators seeking stability.

Earlier this year, the city also opened another affordable housing complex on the grounds of the Jefferson Union High School District, which features 122 units, further demonstrating Daly City’s commitment to supporting its educators.

According to Realtor.com, the median listing home price in San Mateo County was a staggering $1.6 million in June 2024, highlighting the urgent need for affordable housing solutions.

One teacher, Priscilla Patalinghug, faced the possibility of leaving Daly City but was fortunate enough to be accepted into the new complex. She now lives there with her two children, allowing them to remain in a city they cherish for its weather and welcoming community.

This initiative not only enhances the quality of life for teachers but also strengthens the educational community in Daly City, ensuring that educators can thrive both personally and professionally.
