Ayanna Anderson on leading diversity, equity and inclusion at Highwire PR

In the realm of diversity, inclusion, and belonging, few voices resonate as profoundly as that of Ayanna Anderson, Senior Vice President of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging at Highwire PR. A driving force for bold, values-led action, Anderson’s career is a testament to her dedication and expertise. During our recent interview, we delved into her journey, the challenges she faces, and the vision she has for a more inclusive future.

Her story is one of resilience and commitment, marked by a profound understanding of the cultural dynamics at play in corporate settings. As a native of Chicago’s South Side and a proud Hampton University alumna, Anderson has a background in Africana Studies and public relations that uniquely positions her to lead Highwire PR’s diversity initiatives with insight and authenticity. Her journey, filled with personal and professional milestones, offers valuable lessons for anyone committed to advancing DEI in their organizations.

A kaleidoscope career in diversity and inclusion

Anderson’s journey to her current role at Highwire PR is nothing short of inspiring. As the inaugural leader for diversity at the agency, she has been instrumental in fostering an environment where inclusion and belonging are paramount. Reflecting on her early career, Anderson shared, “I’ve been in workplaces that didn’t prioritize cultural fluency or welcome diversity. My experiences shaped my commitment to creating spaces where everyone feels valued and understood.”

Her return to the agency world in 2020, after years of teaching African American studies, marked a significant shift. Anderson’s dual expertise in public relations and DEI uniquely positions her to navigate the complexities of corporate inclusion. “I left PR agency life because of the lack of representation and understanding,” she explained. “Returning to this space allowed me to blend my passion for cultural work with my professional skills.”

Fighting against the DEI recession

The post-2020 era saw a surge in corporate commitment to DEI, but Anderson acknowledges the current challenges. “The retreat from DEI efforts is real and pervasive,” she stated. However, Highwire PR remains steadfast in its commitment. Anderson highlighted the agency’s proactive approach, such as adopting Juneteenth as a formal holiday and engaging in meaningful programming to educate and celebrate diversity.

One of Anderson’s notable achievements is the upcoming release of Highwire’s first-ever report on their DEI efforts. Unlike traditional reports focused solely on metrics, this report emphasizes cultural responsiveness and the real impact of their initiatives. “We want to tell our story beyond numbers,” she said. “Our affinity groups, like the sister circle formed by Black women in our agency, have sparked important conversations and led to impactful changes.”

A key theme in Anderson’s approach to DEI is the importance of community and continuous education. Drawing from her HBCU background and membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she emphasizes the power of collective vision and resilience. “Being part of these communities instilled a sense of purpose and responsibility,” Anderson noted. “It’s about standing on the shoulders of those who came before and paving the way for the next generation.”

Beyond her professional achievements, Anderson remains deeply committed to community service. Her involvement with organizations like the National Council of Negro Women and local initiatives in Oakland reflects her belief in giving back. “Being of service rounds out your experience,” she said. “It’s not just about work; it’s about contributing to the world around you.”

In conclusion, Anderson’s journey is a powerful example of how passion, resilience, and a commitment to inclusion can transform workplaces and communities. Her work at Highwire PR is not just about meeting diversity metrics but about creating a lasting cultural shift. As we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of DEI, leaders like Anderson remind us that true inclusion requires sustained effort, collective action, and an unwavering belief in the power of diversity.
