5 unsettling moments in Kneeland police footage
Newly released police recordings outline chaotic hours leading to the death of Cowboys player Marshawn Kneeland.
High-speed chase reaches dangerous levels
Newly released police recordings are painting a fuller and more disturbing picture of the final hours of Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Marshawn Kneeland. The dashcam and body camera footage begins late on Nov. 5 along the Dallas North Tollway, where a Texas Department of Public Safety officer attempted to stop a speeding Dodge Charger.
The chase quickly escalated. Earlier reports estimated the top speed at 230 km/h, but the video shows the patrol unit pushing closer to 255 km/h. The higher estimate illustrates just how quickly the pursuit grew more volatile as officers attempted to close the distance before losing sight of the vehicle. The rapid pace set the stage for an overnight search that would soon expand across fields, wooded areas and drainage systems.
A violent crash in Frisco shifts the search
The Charger eventually disappeared from the officer’s view, but a new discovery soon redirected the investigation. The vehicle was found after it had collided with a Ford F-350 truck in Frisco, landing on a patch of grass near the tollway. The woman driving the truck described watching the Charger approach in her rearview mirror at an overwhelming speed before the impact.
Once officers searched the vehicle, they confirmed that Kneeland had been behind the wheel. An empty holster found beneath the driver’s seat raised immediate concern, especially given the uncertainty surrounding where he had gone after fleeing the crash on foot. This moment transformed the operation from a vehicle pursuit to a potentially dangerous manhunt.
Officers deploy drones, K-9 units and pepper balls
The scale of the search grew rapidly. State troopers and Frisco police officers began moving through wooded sections near the tollway and into a network of drainage tunnels often used as runoff pathways beneath sidewalks and parking areas.
Footage shows officers deploying drones overhead, using K-9 units to follow potential scent trails and preparing for the possibility of encountering Kneeland in an enclosed environment. Pepper balls were fired into tunnel openings to discourage hiding in low-visibility areas. The tactical response reflected their increasing worry that Kneeland could be armed and in a distressed mental state, a combination that added urgency and risk to every step of the search.
Kneeland’s girlfriend is detained before joining the effort
A significant and emotional moment unfolded when Kneeland’s pregnant girlfriend, Catalina Mancera, arrived at the scene. The footage captures officers briefly detaining her, placing her in handcuffs and securing her in a patrol vehicle while searching her Buick SUV. Authorities were taking broad safety precautions due to the unknowns surrounding the unfolding situation.
Once released, Mancera shifted immediately into a cooperative role. She informed officers of Kneeland’s prior mental health challenges and expressed fear about his intentions. She also attempted to reach him by phone and contacted his agent several times, hoping he would respond to someone familiar. Her involvement became a driving force as officers continued combing the surrounding areas.
The search ends in tragedy
By around 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 6, the search came to a heartbreaking conclusion. Kneeland was found inside a portable toilet, having died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers had spent hours clearing areas on foot, relying on drones, canines and physical searches through tunnels and wooded terrain. The discovery confirmed that Kneeland had acted on the despair Mancera had feared.
In the days that followed, the Dallas Cowboys honored the second-year player during their home game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Teammates wore shirts featuring his image and the stadium observed a moment of silence in his memory. Coach Brian Schottenheimer later announced the creation of the Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund, established to support Mancera and her unborn child as they navigate their loss.
The footage now made public reveals the frantic pace, intense emotions and complicated decisions that defined the tragic final hours of a young athlete whose promising career ended far too soon.
